We took these pictures on the slopes of Mount Shasta in N. Calif. at the end of July 2009.

I didn't remember our having spent time around Mount Shasta so I planned a stop there at the start of our trip to Portland. I was surprised to see the numbers and varieties of wildflowers at the end of July.

Flowers and insects have been my focus since I got the Nikon D5000 and a Tamron 90 mm macro lens in mid-June so I was happy to get this bee picture at the start of our time on Mount Shasta.
We have seen fireweed before but this time we saw dense stands and closeup views.
This fireweed has striking color, good contrasts and interesting flower parts. Great subject matter.
This image of a another fireweed stalk shows the drooping stamens, the cross shaped pistil and flowers in various stages.
When I look at this fireweed bud, I think of ballet slippers.
A wasp lit on this fireweed bud and started to crawl inside as I watched. It couldn't wait until the flower opened!
I was concentrating on the wasp entered the fireweed bud and didn't see all the ants on a cluster of very immature buds a few inches away. When I viewed the image on my computer, I saw the ants. That sort of discovery happens frequently with macro photos.
Another flower highlight was St. John's wort. We saw masses of them on Mount Shasta and at other places on our trip..
The individual st. John's wort flowers have lots of stamens and lots of crisp detail.
