Our first crayfish species: Pacifastacus leniusculus (native to the west coast with introductions from the Columbia River)

  • Hummingbird on . . . hummingbird sage in the Oak Habitat IPM garden.
  • Two male, one female house finch on blue elderberry.
  • Jim picks up the first trap as another participant holds a bucket of water at the ready.
  • Jim and Helena inspect the catch from the first trap.

  • Our second species of crayfish (Orconectes virilis (introduced from Ohio). The stout, pale blue claws of the adults are diagnostic. Top . . .

  • Otter scat at the first sampling site. This was several days old, but a nearby pile was from yesterday. Both were right in an otter slide.
  • An otter-killed crayfish (and eaten -- at least the good parts).
  • Four in hand. Helena was an expert at handling crayfish without getting pinched.
  • California roach (native) in spawning coloration.
  • Measuring a Sacramento sucker from the third trap.
  • Note the bilobed lower lip.
  • The second sucker was a little smaller and had a parasitic worm (red patch on fin)

  • As we were leaving, Bill got a couple of nice shots of a monarch butterfly on a buckeye blossom.
