160312 Sheet mulching in Civic Park

Today we sheet mulched a site for next winter's restoration. Sheet mulching is fairly simple, but it requires teamwork and close coordination between teams. First smooth the site and dig an anchor trench at the top of the slope. Then lay cardboard and wet it, lay jute on top, add mulch, spread it, and repeat until done. Paul fills one of the last few wheelbarrow loads we need.

  • Mary explains the sheet mulching process to the group before we begin work.
  • The first two strips of cardboard and jute have been laid and Suma, Yukta, and Mary are almost finished spreading the mulch. Meanwhile, Linda and Rochelle wait to finish unrolling the third cardboard strip.
  • Doug and Scott lay the fourth cardboard strip.
  • Larry, Max, Marcus, and Paul working at the mulch pile.
  • Ed leaves with a mulch load while Max, Marcus, Ed, and Larry prepare to take a short break from loading.
  • Maria returns from the work site with an empty wheelbarrow while Ed takes his recently-filled one to dump.
  • Paul starts back to the mulch pile after dumping his load of mulch. Meanwhile, Max spreads mulch with an upside down rake.
  • Suma, Maria, Rochelle, Mary, and Max spread mulch on strip 6 (of 8).
  • Linda adds mulch while spreading proceeds in the background.
  • Scott holds the bottom of the newest cardboard strip in place while the top is anchored in the trench (not pictured).
  • Sheet mulching is a matter of doing many tasks simultaneously.
  • Maria uses large staples to tack down the newly laid cardboard and jute.
  • Larry and Mary fill in the center of the anchor trench where the sheet mulching has been finished.
  • Rochelle and Mary tacking down another newly-laid strip.
  • Max and Marcus holding down the bottom of the strip until the tacking crew reaches them.
  • Linda stretches the jute so it will reach all the way across the cardboard. The purpose of the jute is to make an uneven surface that will hold the mulch in place on a slope.
  • Ed and Larry return for yet another load of mulch.
