We saw White clay mariposa lilies (Calochortus argillosus) dotted in sunny grassland areas. In several places, we could see a hundred or more in bloom from a single vantage point. We were impressed by the number of mariposa lilies in bloom. We were surprised that the bloom lasted so long this year.
From a distance, harvest brodiaea look like Ithuriel's spears which bloom earlier. You get used to seeing numbers of Ithuriel's spears and it is easy to dismiss harvest brodiaea as more Ithuriel's spears. This trip was the right time to see harvest brodiaea in grassy areas.
John spotted some plants along a spring flow that he thought might be columbines but they weren't blooming. We waited and waited and finally, at the end of May they were starting to bloom. The nearby seep monkeyflowers started blooming much earlier and kept on blooming. Lots of other species of plants taking advantage of the flowing water.
