As we drove down toward the Central Valley, we saw flowers and made stops where there was room to pull off the road. We usually found more than one thing to admire. This little gilia was intensely purple. With our bare eyes, the flower was just a purple dot when we spotted it.
The big stars of our Hwy 155 segment were purple globe lilies. We stopped at a likely flower spot and noticed something purple under leaves at the edge of the gravel turnout. It was a globe lily. We saw footprints going uphill; someone thought there were good things up there. We found dozens of globe lilies and other things too.
On our way back to Hwy 14 and 395, we stopped to examine a flowering tree on the side of the highway. The floppy trumpet shape, the markings on the petals and the soft texture of the petals reminded me of desert willow flowers.
